Summary
Unit price is a forthcoming official product data attribute in Shopify. However, at the time of this post, this change has still not been rolled out to North American users of Shopify.
Until Unit Price is a first class attribute in the Shopify ecosystem, it is limited in its scope and integration into the system. As such, the Grocerist theme supports Unit Price via a product metafield.
This metafield is a text metafield used for display purposes only, meaning, unit price is not a dynamic value in the system and does not in any way impact the cart or how any pricing is calculated. It is solely a display value.
Creating the unit price metafield
This basic text metafield can be set up in Shopify via the platform's own native solution.
In the admin, navigate to Settings > Metafields. Here you can create a new product metafield;
- Name it Unit Price
- Make the description Unit Price
- Select the Text metafield type and select the option of Single line text
Ensure that the definition is pinned (top right corner) and then hit Create. Pinning the definition will ensure that this metafield will display on the admin page for products.

3. Minicart
4. Cart page
5. Checkout
